COLLINS – More empty promises for help go down the drain

HOW QUICKLY things change.

Not too long ago, I wrote that help for Ukraine would last until something bigger came along in the news cycle. This, in the midst of Ukraine’s heroic battle to hold off the Russian horde. Countries swearing to stand by Ukraine “as long as it took” to win the battle.

Billions of dollars spent shipping firepower and other resources to put Ukrainian forces on a more level playing field.

But as those resources have been used up, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is finding it harder and harder to gain additional funds for his efforts. The situation is becoming a standoff, and both sides have their issues. Ukraine’s is primarily funding and the Russians are facing more and more discontent within their country as more and more protests take place against the drawn-out conflict.

If the battle continues forever, Russia wins. The best Ukraine can hope for then is some sort of peace treaty in which they can still maintain their independence. That may be hard given the current global lack of interest in their plight.

  1. Game theory, specifically the Prisoner’s Dilemma theory, suggests otherwise. Models show the most effective approach in human interactions, when the goal is overall favourable outcomes for all parties, is for the single party to immediately respond in-kind to any action. That includes both acts of kindness and aggression. And before you dismiss game theory, the Prisoner’s Dilemma specifically addresses hostage situations. Turns out that the biblical “eye for an eye” was way ahead of the progressive BS being forced on us.

If you have a proposal to resolve this conflict, please consider presenting your perspective in council chambers on Tuesday. I hope to see you there.

  2. One atrocity does not justify another. We’re not living in Biblical times. How much retribution is the world going to allow Israel to enact upon the children of Palestine in the name of self-defense? Enough already. Stop the bombing.

  3. I can’t understand the indifference and complacency regarding this ongoing sadistic destruction and slaughter in Gaza.
Any country that is mass killing over 25,000 civilians while preaching so-called self defence with overwhelming superior military power, is undeserving of our support.
Nothing justifies the killing of over 11,000 children.
You have to be either racist, ignorant, or suffering from a break in reality or a black heart, to condone these disgusting war crimes. These people dying are innocent human beings despite what the Netanyahu led zionists want you to believe.
The lack of humanity currently on display in our insensible privileged western world is a combination of: paranoia, ghosts of the past, and high manipulation of the ignorant masses.
The right of U.S. backed Israel to self defence does not mean the right to commit ethnic cleansing or a genocide.
Any moral authority spouted by the collective west has ended with support for this disgusting slaughter.
SIN is from the Hebrew letter Schin… meaning fall short of knowledge.

    • Denis, would you consider preparing a statement and presenting to council on Tuesday? Stating our various positions on this conflict isn’t helping. But I know someone who can.

Israel has disregarded motions from the UN many times before, but have they ever faced a motion from the visionaries on Kamloops city council?

Hope to see both you and Doug in council chambers on Tuesday.

Doug, you raise good points. I suggest you present your case on the Ukraine Russia conflict to the supreme council on Tuesday. I hear there’s a councillor in attendance with a knack for international conflict that would likely take up your case.
