POLICE – Man arrested as part of impersonation investigation
A joint effort between Kamloops and federal RCMP officers led to one man being taken into custody and the execution of several search warrants.
On Wednesday Dec. 6, 2023, the Kamloops RCMP Detachment’s General Investigations Support Team (GIST), supported by the Serious Crimes and Targeted Enforcement Units, attended an address on Versatile Drive as part of an investigation into an attempt to impersonate a police officer offence.
As police officers prepared to approach the suspect in a parking lot, he fled into a commercial location, where he was apprehended following a brief foot pursuit.
“It’s still early, but at this stage in the investigation, no local reports have been received to suggest someone in Kamloops has been actively impersonating a police officer,” said Staff Sergeant Todd Wiebe, who oversees the Kamloops RCMP Detachment’s GIST, TEU, and SCU sections.
“If anyone has information that may indicate otherwise, please contact the detachment as soon as possible.”
The Kamloops RCMP Detachment’s involvement in the investigation began in late November, when it was contacted by the RCMP’s Federal Serious and Organized Crime (FSOC) Cybercrime Investigative Team.
“The investigation is active and ongoing, therefore we can’t get into specific details about it, but the arrest and subsequent search warrant executions are a great illustration of the teamwork that occurred to identify a suspect and ascertain evidence to support anticipated charge recommendations, as part of the assessment and approval process,” said Supt. Jeff Pelley of the Kamloops RCMP detachment.
Anyone with information they think may be related to this investigation is asked to contact the Kamloops RCMP Detachment at 250-828-3000 and reference file 2023-42267.
