LETTER – CTV story on carbon tax opinions is misleading
A news story by CTV earlier this morning (Monday, Dec. 11k 2023) had a headline reading, “Nearly half of Canadians think carbon tax is ineffective at fighting climate change”
I invite your thoughts on that comment, especially given that what the poll really indicated was that ONLY 1 in 5 Canadians believes the Carbon Tax is effective.
Further on into the story were additional details, on a second polling question; one that asked respondents their thoughts on the effectiveness of the carbon tax in it’s goal of having people reduce fuel consumption. On that question, just eleven percent of respondents indicated they thought the carbon tax was effective — while a full forty-four percent disagreed.
The ‘combined’ numbers for ‘Effective’ and ‘Somewhat Effective’ totaled 36% — while the numbers for ‘Ineffective’ and ‘Somewhat Ineffective’ totaled 61%.
With this in mind, I find it extremely disappointing that CTV put out such a misleading, and slanted, news story.

The bottom line is that despite misleading political posturing from PP and others and despite misleading articles and polls we drive too much and for little purpose in many cases. On top of the carbon tax I would like to see a large tax on large vehicles and tolls for road use. And remember Alan, electric vehicles will not really reduce our overall environmental footprint.

You’re right, thats spun in a very specific way. Not sure exactly what CTV is trying to do by reporting it that way, but its not helpful.
A more accurate way to tell the story would have been to say (given the chart you included here) that the % of people who feel that the carbon tax is effective towards combating climate change, has increasing in the last 4 months.
