PETERS – Safety needs to be at the forefront as McGill Road gets busier
Posted on December 2, 2023 in Local Voices, Page One, Peters // 4 Comments
BEFORE WE SAY TOO MUCH about the crash on McGill Road Wednesday, it’s important to note few of the details have been confirmed.
We know a Dodge Ram pickup truck seemingly careened out of control, hitting trees on the boulevard before slamming into a number of vehicles stopped at a red light.
We know one of the stopped vehicles contained members of the TRU Wolfpack men’s volleyball team.
Having said that, safety on McGill Road where it skirts the TRU campus has long been a concern.

Try driving the speed limit in this town. All sorts of aggressive drivers will become agitated and tall gate or pass on a double lane. Seeing 80-90k on the Overlanders Bridge is not uncommon.
What is uncommon is seeing police enforce traffic laws. Where are the police? We have some big pay raises to cover.
Want to raise money? Stand at the side of any road you pick with a radar gun, and you’ll net a million in an afternoon.

Road safety needs to be taken way way way more seriously by the authorities EVERYWHERE. To begin with building roads that resemble Formula One race tracks is a fundamental flaw. Secondly, a consistent enforcement of road and motor vehicles regulations needs to be mandatory. Modified vehicles (often with blackened windows and loud exhausts) distracted driving and speeding need to be daily targets by the dedicated RCMP division.
I have avoided using that stretch of road since the accident as the sadness caused by it has been overwhelming.

The authorities build the roads and set the speed limits. The RCMP are busy with crime. Some of the residents of this town are busy ignoring the set limits, driving without any care and attention. And what really disturbs me is half the time their kids are in the car and they do not seem to care about their children ‘s or anyone else’s safety.
And why pay more taxes to hire more police to work to stop the citizens from following rules that are put in place for their safety. Time for people to start talking to each other about road safety.
And now that Christmas is here we will have the ignorant folks drinking and driving more. We need more road blocks – another cost added because of the citizens of Kamloops who ignore rules. Radar guns and increased fines I am totally in favour of.

Safety in the McGill Rd, Summit Dr, and Notre Dame Area has been studied and discussed and nothing has been done really. And as very sadly another tragedy happens we start again to study and debate.
But here is an issue I have raised at city meetings. 50 k an hour in Kamloops. Not now it is 50 – now it is 60k.
Columbia St should have been 50k coming off the Trans Canada. When the access to Kamloops was built there was no Sahali Mall no apartments, no motels and Caribou College was a tiny new campus – but the city has let that be 60 k down to the hospital. That is crazy as we all know 50k – folks go 60k and 60 k folks go 70 k.
And then we have Fortune. Houses and schools meaningless it must be 60 k. Chip trucks and all – I nearly got run over back in 1974 as I used the controlled crossing and went to step off the curb (K children holding each of my hands) a truck came whizzing through the red light on the curb lane. The truck in other lane had stopped for us so all looked well.
And Westsyde Rd. 60 K again. I used that road everyday and did 60 k – lots of folks were not happy with me – tail gating – whizzing past.
I know 10 K is not a lot but it is worth a try and saving one life will be worth it all.
Also if we all slowed down, left a little earlier to get to work or appointments and drove with more care and attention- we could perhaps prevent a few accidents and help our medical system by not having so many people in emergency.
Just some very common sense ideas.
