The figure of 8 million horses dead is for W.W.1. The dogs of war were surrendered by their owners as rationing had begun . There is a song by Eric Bogle, ” As if He Knows ” about the Australian Light Horse leaving the Middle East in W.W.1. Eric also ” The Green Fields Of Flanders “

Just a thought, This Nov. 11th, Wear a Purple Poppy with the Red. All the debt we owe on that day, our forefathers and their friends paid forward for it . Lest we forget !

  Thanks very much for the thought. For those who are unfamiliar with the purple poppy, it’s in remembrance of the millions of animal victims of war. For example, an estimated 750,000 dogs were killed in one week in Britain at the outbreak of World War Two. Thousands of horses died in battle during World War One, and many are still used as military animals. Dogs, of course, continue to serve in war for tracking and rescue. Even pigeons and elephants have served in war.
