WHAT’S UP DOWNTOWN – Summer CAP team exits; welcome the Winter team
IT IS HARD TO BELIEVE that the CAP Team has strolled the streets of Downtown Kamloops since 2004. As an initiative of the Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association, the ambassador program was originally a summer employment opportunity for university students. However, this diverse program has grown since its inception based on input and requests from businesses.
It is worth noting that the Downtown Kamloops perimeter runs from 1st– 10th Avenue and Columbia Street down to the river including 100 West Victoria Street. In 2015, the CAP Team began its year-round patrol with a handful of university graduates with backgrounds in Police & Justice Studies, sciences, and Tourism.
The hard work and demand for past teams made 2017 an eventful and exciting season Downtown. Day in and day out, we have stayed busy from wheeling around public pianos to gathering business surveys to patrolling at sunset.
The following statistics are all based inside the KCBIA area:
- Over 4,133 flyers, notices, and posters hand-delivered to Downtown businesses
- 4,876.4 kilometres traveled
- 1,011 citizens assisted
- 23 first aid treatments
- 386 calls received from businesses regarding events, street issues, etc.
- 91 parking questions answered
- 169 outreach support
- 1430 public safety hazards picked up
Moving into the Fall and Winter our hours will be changing as five of us have returned to university to complete our studies in Psychology, Police & Justice Studies, Geography, Business, and Adventure Studies.
Nevertheless, our Winter team will be available from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday-Saturday starting Sept. 1. Please contact us if you have any questions or comments about business hours, events, street issues, and more.
