McQUARRIE – Should British Columbia start selling its abundant fresh water?

There's a lot of gold down there.

There’s a lot of gold down there.

WITH ALL this post-Trump inauguration talk of NAFTA and America’s return to a 1930s style of isolationism, I’m wondering if we are missing something.

mcquarriecolhednewSomething, if you will pardon the pun, that trumps our oil, pipelines, natural gas, forestry and yes, even copper and gold.

It represents undreamed of national wealth yet holds the potential for unimaginable controversy and conflict.  It is an economic resource and we own close to 20 per cent of the world’s supply.

  1. At the present time no but who knows what the future will hold. The south western aquifer has been pumped dry. The States and Canada must remain allied. It will become an absolute necessity. One does not watch it,s good neighbours suffer. The Atacama and Sahara and other deserts as well were once verdant areas.Weather patterns are changing and scientists for all their knowledge and theory cannot predict the future of the great plains,at the present the worlds breadbasket.Things are going to change for all peoples, perhaps beyond even present imaginations.

  2. Not an option. Once we start selling water, with our history of making bad for Canada trade deals, then the cat will be out of the bag, and we will lose.

  4. “Do we want to sell our water?
If we don’t sell it, will it be taken from us through NAFTA or other means?
Do we have any idea of the environmental impacts that would result from diverting water from our rivers?”

Are you talking to elementary school children here? Or are looking to bait the topic, because AJAX might want copious amounts of water too?

-The people of Kamloops are not elementary school children…

A huge issue and my first thought is that some things are just NOT for sale. The Council of Canadians has this issue as their central focus. https://canadians.org/public-water On the other hand if times get tough in Canada, it’s always nice to have that ‘ace’ in your back pocket. Having travelled throughout the southwest US I fully undertsand the importance and opportunity that water would play in food security for both the US and Canada.
