CHARBONNEAU – Thank you, Mr. Trump, for promising to kill the TPP
IT’S A RARE THING when the views of president-elect Trump and Canadian activists align as in their opposition to the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
Trump has vowed to kill the deal the day he is sworn in.
However, the source of loathing couldn’t be more different. Canada is a trading nation and we depend on the flow of goods for jobs. Trump wants to set up barriers to trade and regards such deals as “job-killing.”
Actually, Trump can’t ‘kill’ the deal itself, he can only remove the US from it, the deal will go on. Canada would still be a part of the agreement, as it relates to how Canada will trade with countries other than the US. The unknown is whether or not the removal of the US from the trade agreement will prompt other involved countries to remove themselves as they will not benefit from the US involvement.
Its an international deal.
Trump and the US are only a part of the deal, not in charge of it.
