Thanks to all who helped create new Journalism bursary
I had the pleasure of presenting the first Armchair Mayor News Journalism Bursary to Brittany Kapsha at the recent TRU awards day.
Brittany is completing her Journalism degree in public relations and marketing. What’s special about this bursary is that it’s being provided by readers of the former Armchair Mayor News site who donated towards the site. When I transitioned into the new NewsKamloops.com site, there was enough in donations to provide for six years of $500 bursaries for deserving J-school students, succeeding the three years of Mel Rothenburger Journalism Bursaries that were so generously provided by Glacier Media when I retired.
I’m finding that more and more Journalism students are going into related fields as job opportunities decline in mainstream journalism, while at the same time, journalism skills are extremely valuable in fields such as PR, marketing, event organization, and corporate communications.
Brittany is an outstanding student — in fact, she received the MR bursary last year plus the A.M. News bursary this year. Any employer will be fortunate to have her.
Thanks again to those who supported the Kamloops A.M. News with donations — they’re going to an excellent cause in helping our next generation of journalists.
— Mel Rothenburger
