UPDATE — A lockdown was lifted at Summit elementary late Wednesday afternoon after Mounties investigated a report from the school that an unspecified threat had been received.

Shortly after 2 p.m. Kamloops RCMP got a call from the school. Staff at the school had locked it down to ensure student safety and notified police.

Officers arrived, cordoned off the area, and entered the school to ensure there was no threat to the students inside the building.

“The threat was non- specific in nature, but was made to the school and the caller indicated they had a weapon,” said Cpl. Cheryl Bush.

Once the inside of the school was deemed safe, police set up a meeting place for parents at Pineridge Elementary School to receive information. The outer perimeter of the school was then cleared before students were bussed to Pineridge to be met by parents.

“Kamloops RCMP would like to express their appreciation to School District 73 for their assistance and cooperation, City of Kamloops Community Safety and Kamloops Fire and Rescue for assisting with the emergency reception center for parents, the media for sending out the information and most of all the parents, staff, and students of Summit Elementary School for their patience and understanding during this unfolding event.”

Bush said the investigation into the origin of the call is ongoing. Police are asking anyone with information to please contact Kamloops RCMP or call Crime Stoppers.

NEWS/ POLICE — Police were inside Summit elementary Wednesday afternoon investigating threats to the school.

Kamloops RCMP received a report of the threats at about 2:30 and responded immediately, placing the school in lockdown.

Const. Jason Epp said there are no immediate threats to the children or staff. Because the school is in lockdown and the matter is still being actively investigated parents wishing further information were advised a muster point was being set up at Pine Ridge elementary at 1770 Springview Place.

Once the lockdown at Summit is lifted the children will be bussed to Pine Ridge elementary, Epp said..
