Canadian drama next for film society
The second film in the Kamloops Film Society’s Winter 2015 series will be Maxime Giroux’ Felix and Meira on Thursday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. at the Paramount Theatre.
Felix and Meira is a Canadian drama directed by Maxime Giroux and starring Martin Dubreuil, Hadas Yaron and Luzer Twersky.
In Giroux’s latest feature, an unusual romance blossoms between two lost souls who inhabit the same neighbourhood but vastly different worlds. Meira (Hadas Yaron) is a young Hasidic Jewish mother in Montreal’s Mile End district who secretly rebels against her faith by listening to soul music and taking birth control pills; Félix (Martin Dubreuil) is a loner grieving the recent death of his estranged father.
Intrigued by Meira, Félix hopes her religious devotion will provide insight into his loss, and though she rebuffs him at first, a mutual affection soon arises between the two. As Meira’s desire for change becomes harder for her to hide, the young woman is faced with a stark choice: remain within the community she has always known, or pursue an uncertain future outside of it.
Giroux, a Montreal-born director of music videos and short films, has directed three features: Demain (2008), Jo pour Jonathan (2010), plus Félix et Meira (2014).
Tickets are available in advance at MovieMart (444 St. Paul) and at the Paramount Theatre Monday through Wednesday evenings, or at the door on the Thursday evening screening. A $2 annual membership in the Kamloops Film Society is required. Please bring your 2014 blue membership card to each screening.
