MP defends ‘law-abiding’ hunters
NEWS/ POLITICS — Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo MP Cathy McLeod found herself staunchly defending hunters in Parliament this week.
McLeod blasted the NDP in connection with gun ownership and its opposition to the government’s new firearms bill.
She was responding to a comment she said was made by Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca MP Randall Garrison the previous day that gun owners were “law-abiding until they are not.”
Garrison is the NDP public safety critic.
“Is he really saying that anyone who owns a gun is a potential criminal, just for having the gall to enjoy going hunting in the fall?” McLeod said.
Garrison should apologize to her constituents, said McLeod.
She said the Conservative government is “committed to standing up for law-abiding hunters, farmers and sports shooters. Hunting is an important part of Canadian heritage. Previous Liberal governments have tried to put a stop to this way of life by smothering hunters in red tape.”
The Conservatives introduced Bill C-42, the Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act, in October to “cut red tape for law-abiding firearms owners and provide safe and simple firearms policies.”
Among other things, it would eliminate Possession Only Licences for firearms and convert them to Possession and Acquisition Licences, and reduce paperwork on transporting restricted and prohibited firearms.

Actually, no. He did not say “ anyone who owns a gun is a potential criminal, just for having the gall to enjoy going hunting in the fall?”
He said, “gun owners are law abiding until they are not.”
And everyone is a law abiding citizen until they are not! He is completely correct!
I am so embarassed that we have a Harper rep as our MP. I am certainly not represented by this kind of behaviour!
