RCMP expecting busy Halloween
NEWS/ POLICE — Kamloops RCMP are asking citizens to take extra precautions on Halloween night to ensure the safety of trick-or-treaters and those enjoying festivities.
With Halloween falling on a Friday, police anticipate the night to be busy. There will be a full complement of officers working throughout the night with additional resources including traffic enforcement, Auxiliary officers, Citizens on Patrol, City of Kamloops By-Law officers and other support units.
During the trick-or-treating hours, drivers and pedestrians need to be extra cautious, said Cpl. Cheryl Bush.
“The residential areas are particularly busy with youngsters darting from house to house, often in a hurry and not watching for traffic,” she said.
A City of Kamloops bylaw requires anyone possessing fireworks to have a permit. The permit is obtained from a licensed firework vendor, at the time of purchase.
“Fireworks can be extremely hazardous if mishandled, please ensure that children are told not to approach or handle any fireworks. During the later hour celebrations, be sure to have a safe ride home with a designated driver, taxi, or transit.”
Police will have extra enforcement, with road checks throughout the city. Bush asked parents to ensure children have something bright or reflective added to their costume, and to travel in groups with their children, or ensure older children have a buddy system. Check over treats before allowing children to enjoy them.
Drivers should slow down and expect the unexpected. “Use caution when backing up to look for kids behind you – If your plans include alcohol, plan for a safe ride home.”
