Tranquille corridor revamp edges forward

NEWS/ CITY HALL — A report on plans to revamp the Tranquille Road corridor from the airport to Brocklehurst will be ready for City council to look at early next year.

Roundabout is contemplated for exit from airport onto Tranquille Road.

Roundabout is contemplated for corridor.

Council will get an update Tuesday on discussions by the Tranquille Road Beautification/Enhancement and Gateway Task Force. The task force has been wrestling with how to beef up the corridor to make a good first impression on visitors. The upgrades would be phased in.

At a recent meeting, the group talked about greenery, signage and safety features, and getting a draft report together, complete with costs, for council’s consideration in February. Public consultation plans haven’t been finalized.

One phase of the enhancement project would include a proposed roundabout at Airport Road as well as beautification, while the Brocklehurst section would include bus stop pullouts, a multi-use pathway and pedestrian walkway.

The task force was formed after staff initially proposed a $24-million project.

A good first impression for visitor is a city-wide endeavor. Spending more money without a coordinated, city-wide plan is bordering insanity.
