Countdown to civic nomination day

NEWS/ CIVIC ELECTION 2014 — If nomination day, Oct. 10, is the official start of the civic election race, today (Tuesday) might be considered the drive to the starting line.

City HallNominations open today for municipal campaigns across the province, meaning those intending to run can file their papers any time between now and 4 p.m. on Oct. 10.  For the first time, candidates in the Kamloops civic election must collect 10 signatures from eligible voters in the City to be nominated.

So, far, those who have declared their intentions to run for mayor are: incumbent Peter Milobar, Mayor Open Pitbelly (performance artist Elaine Sedgman), and Ben James.

Up to today, intended candidates for the eight Kamloops City council seats include incumbents Ken Christian, Marg Spina, Tina Lange, Pat Wallace, Arjun Singh, Nelly Dever and Donovan Cavers; former councillor Nancy Bepple, who resigned earlier this year due to health reasons; Annette Glover, Mike O’Reilly, Glen Thompson, Dustin McIntyre, Daljit Sadhra, Deiter Dudy, Bob Dieno and Peter Kerek.

Several others are considering running, including former councillor Denis Walsh, who has said he might run either for councillor or mayor.
