Quick start for local schools

NEWS/ SCHOOLS — Kamloops schools will be up and running quickly in the wake of the teachers’ 86 per cent vote in favour of ending their strike, says Kamloops-Thompson superintendent Karl deBruijn.

He said today, Friday, the usual work on getting the buildings ready was slowed down by the strike  and they aren’t 100 per cent but for the most part they’re in good shape.

“I’m feeling great, it’s so refreshing to drive by the schools and not see the picket lines,” he told DBC Daybreak Kamloops.

DeBruijn pointed out the province’s school districts still have to ratify the settlement.

For the most part, Kamloops-Thompson schools will tap into the regular schedule without changes, he said, and won’t extend days or the school year, but some adjustments will be made to exam schedules. The holiday schedule won’t be changed, either.

Teachers will focus on learning outcomes and key competences, the superintendent said.

Some sports teams will likely see abbreviated seasons.

Most B.C. schools are expected to be open Monday.
