NEWS/ POLICE — A knife-wielding shoplifter threatened a supermarket employee Friday before making a short-lived getaway.

A loss prevention officer at the Coopers Market at 450 Lansdowne Street tried to apprehend a man suspected of shoplifting from the store about 9 a.m., but the man pulled out a knife and threatened him.

The culprit then escaped, and police were called.

Const. Jason Epp said several witnesses kept track of the suspect, and RCMP found him several blocks away.

He was arrested without incident.

A man is in custody, and Epp said charges of robbery and assault with a weapon are being considered.
