Annette Glover announces she’ll run for seat on City council
NEWS/ CIVIC ELECTION 2014 — Long-time Kamloops school trustee Annette Glover joined the hunt for a City council seat Tuesday.
Glover made the announcement at a morning media conference at the entrance to the McArthur Island Sports and Events Centre, saying she’ll focus on jobs, local manufacturing, a new performing arts centre, and capitalizing on Thompson Rivers University.
Glover wasn’t specific about the performing arts centre — which will be the focus of a feasibility study this fall and likely a referendum next year — but said a new “performance centre” should be built to attract “a broad range of entertainment and a facility utilized seven days a week.”
She said Kamloops should “stop giving away the benefits of our natural resources” and build a broader manufacturing base.
“Let’s double the current Kamloops manufacturing employment of approximately seven per cent, keeping more resources and our children at home.”
Glover, who has been a school trustee for 18 years, is a self-employed management systems consultant and former medical laboratory technologist at Royal Inland Hospital.
She chaired the finance and planning committee for the school board for 10 years in addition to other committee work, has sat on the City’s Parks and Recreation Committee, and has volunteered for groups such as the BIG Little Science Centre, Kamloops-Tangalle Friendship Committee, and B.C. Interior Community Foundation.

Annette Glover has given more service to our community in ten years than bitter cynics like Grouchy could provide in several lifetimes.

How is she going to double manufacturing? Is she connected with Warren Buffet?
Beside, that’s probably not a job for a city Councillor.
I think she will be a side move at best. Certainly no better than the current crop.

I’ll confirm with Annette but I believe she told NL it has more cons than pros.

I spoke with Annette and she confirms that “My cons list is far outweighing my pros list” based on three main areas of concern: urban planning (proximity of the mine to Kamloops), the need for up-to-date legislation on mining, and health/ environment. She says it will be “very difficult” to change her mind. “I am open-minded and I’m receptive to learning more but right now I’m opposed to it.”

Yet another one that wants to beat the ” performing arts ” drum. I just don’t see the value in borrowing even more money for a building that will sit empty for most of the year. How about some candidates that want to run on fiscal prudence, and reigning in city staff and their penchant for throwing tax dollars at every new thing they see somewhere else.

I’m always amused at Politician’s who want to ride the coat tails of TRU. TRU has done a great job of looking after itself.

You’re right Irene. TRU has done a good job of taking care of itself, but I don’t feel that the city really utilizes the well of educated, employable people who come from it. If you can develop jobs for these graduates, we can be better at keeping them in the community. This doesn’t necessarily mean mining of trades, but also in sciences and tech fields.
