Crowd expected for casino hearing
NEWS/ CITY HALL — A sizeable crowd is expected for tonight’s (Tuesday’s) rezoning hearing on a proposal for a new casino at the former Rona building in Aberdeen.
Instead of holding the hearing in City council chambers as usual, the City has moved it to the Coast Kamloops Hotel and Conference Centre on Rogers Way in anticipation of public interest.
Gateway Casinos and Entertainment wants to shut down its Lake City Casino at the Hotel 540 on Victoria Street and replace it with a bigger facility at the Rona property on Versatile Drive.
City planners have recommended rejection of the proposal, saying it conflicts with the official plan for the downtown core, which encourages centralization of amenities there. Planners say removing a major attraction would be contrary to that plan.
Several letters have been received by the City, most favouring the proposed move despite concerns about traffic on Versatile Drive. Gateway’s plan to rectify traffic issues in the area of the Rona property will be outlined at the public hearing, which starts at 7 p.m.

i think that the city planners need to wake up, and realize that the downtown cannot accommodate this kind of development. just because they would like it to happen, does not mean that it can.
