Blues to retro to bluegrass on grass
It’s all about the music this weekend in and around Kamloops. Sun Peaks presents the 5th Annual Retro Concert Weekend. Running Aug. 15 – 17, you can expect to see tribute bands honour the likes of Johnny Cash, ZZ Top, Bon Jovi and many more, all for free. Also part of the weekend is ‘Get Retro’ at Jo’s Road Race. Online registration is closed, but you can register the day of for 1km, 5km, or 10km, fun run – don’t be afraid to dress in your best retro outfit. If you’re willing to travel, it’s the 22nd Annual Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival. Another three days of music, artisan booths, food and children’s activities, Aug 15-17. This year’s lineup of performers includes The Souljazz Orchestra, The Sheepdogs, MonkeyJunk, The Strumbellas and Black Joe Lewis. With more than 35 performers on the schedule and many workshops (which turn into amazing jam sessions between the performers) there’s a music genre for everyone. Perhaps you’d like to stay close to Kamloops this weekend, on Saturday, Aug. 16, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. take in Overlander Days. Enjoy live performances throughout the day, a kid zone with face painting, bouncy castles and more. Taste delicious food from local North Shore restaurants, and since it’s happening at McDonald Park, there’s the outdoor pool and splash pad to cool off in.
On Sunday afternoon, Aug. 17, experience Quartette. Bring your lawn chair, blanket or just sit on the grass to enjoy this outdoor concert at the scenic Tranquille Farm Fresh in the Sunken Gardens. These four singer/songwriters will perform an array of folk, roots, country and bluegrass music from their award-winning repertoire.
