Letter — Campaign underway to revive TRU Wolfpack hockey

LETTER — My name is Cameron Weir and I recently was a member of the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack hockey team from the BCIHL. As of July 29, 2014, TRU has ceased operations of the program, this news coming with less than a month till training camp, leaving my teammates and myself without hockey for next season.

Wolfpack logoThis is coming after talks at the end of May when they told us that yes the hockey program will continue. Now with being so late in the summer we have very limited options, if any at all, if we want to continue our hockey careers.

All of us have worked too hard to get into the position we have for someone to just take that away from us without any notice. Myself and my teammates have started a campaign to revive the program as it is within our rights as TRU students. We have a very short time frame and need your help. Here is an article that best depicts the situation. http://gdrinnan.blogspot.ca/2014/08/fighting-to-save-hockey-program.html.

Also, if all possible can you tweet your support to @TRUHockey and #savetruhockey. Let’s show TRU how tightnit and powerful the hockey community is. We are also actively looking for media outlets to bring awareness to the Okanagan about these events.

We all know hockey is Canada’s game and is massively popular in the Thompson/Okanagan. We have so many hockey players in the region who will go on and play junior and then will be looking for opportunities to play at the college/university level. The hockey program at TRU gives these players that option.

Without Wolfpack hockey, there will be no more opportunity for players to play beyond junior in the entire Thompson/Okanagan.

  1. Just wondering how it is that Selkirk College in Nelson BC, with a much smaller student body and subsequently lesser financing base, has a hockey team yet TRU is unable or unwilling to finance one.
