NEWS/ CITY — Westsyde commuters will be in for a smoother ride this fall after a $1.6-million facelift of a piece of Westsyde Road that has been falling apart for the past few years.

The stretch from the Halston overpass to Franklin Road, which has become pockmarked with broken asphalt, is scheduled for reconstruction by the end of September. Work could begin as early as mid-August.

A recommendation will go to Kamloops City council Tuesday to accept a bid from BA Dawson Blacktop Ltd. of $1,613,186.40 to grind up the old asphalt, repave it, make minor drainage improvements and replace all sanitary, storm, water and surface casings.

The bid was the lower of two and was under both the $1.7-million estimate and the $2.28-million budget. Work will be done over three to four weeks Mondays through Saturdays 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. for the southbound lanes and 7 a.m. to 4 for northbound. Two-way traffic will be maintained.
