Pedestrians take back the streets for Car Free Day in downtown core
NEWS — It’s a Car Free Day in the downtown core on Wednesday — the 200, 300 and 400 blocks of Victoria Street will be pedestrian only as they’re closed to traffic.
Instead of cars, there will be tents, booths, sidewalk sales, music, artists and entertainment as part of the Downtown Merchants Market that runs through Saturday. The Victoria Street closure will be Wednesday only.
And that’s not all. The United Way Community Carnival will be there along with many other community groups, and bike parking will be free.
“The City of Kamloops Car Free Day is like a Saturday Farmers Market on steroids on a Wednesday,” is how the Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association describes it.
The day runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with the exception of the 400 block, which is starting one hour earlier.
Here’s a taste of the rest of the week:
THURSDAY, JULY 24
Downtown Echo’s Taste of the Downtown – 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. No street closures.
Two different serving times: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Restaurant passports are $10 with proceeds going to the local Food Bank and Live at Lunch Music Program.
Diners can vote for their favourite restaurant to win the 5th Annual Golden Fork and Silver Spoon Award. Awarded yearly to the restaurant with the most votes and highest percentage of votes, last year the Golden Fork was awarded to Indian Aroma and the Silver Spoon was awarded to Maurya’s Fine Indian Cuisine.
FRIDAY, JULY 25
Street Battle of the Bands – Fourth Avenue will be closed to traffic between Lansdowne and Victoria Street.
Bands will perform all day long from 12 p.m. noon to 7 p.m. on the New Gold Main Stage located on Fourth Avenue between Lansdowne Street and Victoria Street. The entire block will be closed to traffic as a pedestrian promenade. There will be a main stage, seating, games, misting station and food service street side by the Central Station Pub. BCLC Band prizes are $750 for 1st place, $500 for 2nd place and $250 for 3rd place.
SATURDAY, JULY 26
Saturday Sidewalk Spectacular – No street closures.
Live music, the Saturday Farmers Market and Artisans Square at St. Andrews on the Square.

I wish there was no vehicular traffic from First Ave to Sixth Ave from 1 AM to midnight, seven days a week, 12 months of the year. Imagine that, less stinking, noisy machines and just people, art, culture, food, music.
