Ajax mine project goes to open houses this week

NEWS/ AJAX — KGHM International will unveil a status update for the Ajax open-pit mine this week as it holds a series of open houses.

Computer-generated view of proposed tailings pond. Jacko Lake and the pit are shown north of the pond, new waste rock stack is to right of the pond. Goose Lake would disappear in lower centre of pond. Part of Edith Lake is on far right.

The first open house will be held Tuesday, June 24 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Coast Kamloops Hotel and Conference Centre on Rogers Way. Another will be held at the same location between 2 and 5 p.m. on Wednesday and a third from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Knutsford Hall.

KGHM International spokeswoman Robin Barlett told The Armchair Mayor News the format will be similar to past open houses in which company representatives answer questions about the project.

But she said the plan is still in its early stages.

A month ago KGHM International announced a proposal to change the footprint of the mine site, eliminating the original plan for a dry tailings facility between the Coquihalla Highway and Lac le Jeune and building a tailings pond on ranch land it has purchased south of Jacko Lake.
