Altercation, youth jumps from parkade, IIO investigates

NEWS — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) confirmed today (Monday) its investigators are looking into the death of an 18-year-old male who died Sunday night after jumping off the parkade at Royal Inland Hospital.

IIO signAccording to RCMP, shortly after 8 p.m. on Sunday, its members were called to the hospital in response to a report of a man threatening to jump from the parking structure.

Officers located the youth and verbally engaged him, said IIO. “At some point, a physical altercation ensued. The youth broke free from the officers and reportedly jumped from the third level of the parking structure.”

He sustained serious injuries and died in hospital.

The IIO was notified and deployed investigators to Kamloops today, Monday. The IIO is called in when death or serious injury occurs in an event involving police.
