One nine-year-old girl’s Relay for Life story

LETTER — My daughter has been battling cancer for two years. I won’t go into the horrendous details, but our family has watched her go through this process (by the way she is doing very well at this time) but it has been especially hard on my granddaughter, Makayla, who is nine.

As a result of what Makayla has witnessed her Mom go through, she decided she wanted to do something in her own way. “Relay for Life” is coming up so she decided to collect bottles. I know that is not unique but it was what she wanted to do, and her Mom was her reason for doing it.

As a result, her little endeavor has mushroomed. It started with family members donating their bottles, then friends, to the point she has an account set up at General Grants on Notre Dame, where you take your bottles and ask that they apply the refund amount to account number 120 which is in Makayla’s name. When completed, General Grants will write a cheque to the Relay for Life.

Then it became even bigger with Dave Reaney from AAA Stucco giving her a very generous donation. She was literally speechless when she received the cheque. As a result of Dave’s generosity it spurred Makayla on and she has now received another generous donation from Bikers Construction. In all it is close to $800 she has collected thus far.

There is so much to the story in terms of what our whole family has been through watching Cindy go through her “journey.” What Makayla is doing comes right from her little heart. I know there are few who haven’t in some way been touched by the “monster.” This story is representative of you all.

She will go on stage at the Relay for Life on Saturday at Riverside Park and make her presentation. Her proud little face says it all.
