Gearing up for mountain bike camp June 10
NEWS/ COMMUNITY — The Phoenix Centre is gearing up for the Ashes to Dust Mountain Bike Camp, a two-day bike camp where up to 25 young men who have been impacted by substance abuse will hit the hills of Kamloops Bike Ranch with five pro-riders and instructors.
A launch event for the bike camp is planned for June 10 from 6:30 – 8 p.m. at Desert Gardens, where past participants, coaches, service providers who nominate the youth, and sponsors are invited to learn more about the camp.
The launch event is also a chance for the past participants to re-connect with the mentors including Brett Tippie, Paul Berry, Shawn Melnechuk and Ted Morton.
“The bike camp is an excellent opportunity for youth to experience positive role modeling, and an opportunity to do something they enjoy with a calibre of instruction they would never likely experience otherwise,” said Dave Melville of Child and Youth and Mental Health.
The camp includes food, transportation, bike shuttling, bike gear, and new bikes for those selected to participate. The Phoenix Centre will be seeking donors and sponsors for the bike camp in the coming months, as the camp is organized solely through fundraising activities. Anyone wishing to donate or sponsor the event can contact the Phoenix Centre or visit their website http://www.phoenixcentre.org.
