Marchand, Barnsley to receive Order of B.C.
NEWS/ CITY — Two Kamloops residents are among 25 to be honoured with the 2014 Order of British Columbia.
Former Thompson Rivers University president Roger Barnsley and former senator Len Marchand will be appointed to the order, Lt.-Gov Judith Guichon announced.
Barnsley was president of the University College of the Cariboo from 1998 to 2004 and became president of TRU when it was established in 2004. Since retiring in 2008, he has served on the B.C. Drug Benefit Council and serves as co-chair of the B.C. Council on Admissions and Transfers and as a director of the Vancouver Island Health Authority.
Marchand was the first First Nations person to be elected as a Member of Parliament and to serve in the federal cabinet. He was elected as a Liberal in 1968 in the Kamloops-Cariboo riding. He served as parliamentary secretary to Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development Jean Chretien, Minister of State for Small Business, and Environment Minister.
He was appointed to the Senate in 1984 and retired in 1998. He is a Member of the Order of Canada and was given an Honorary degree by UCC in 1999.
