Kamloops Marathon looking for volunteers as it gets ready for 800 runners on July 27
SPORTS — The Kamloops Marathon needs volunteers and if you can hand out water to passing runners, you may be just what the event needs.
Eight hundred runners are expected for the marathon July 27. A hundred of those will be in the marathon distance, with another 25o in the half marathon, 50 in the marathon relay, 250 in the 8K, and 150 in the 3K fun run.
All distances will start and finish at McArthur Island. Organizers say this year’s course is flatter.
The Kamloops Marathon is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon. Proceeds from the marathon will be used for financial aid for student athletes at TRU.
Karen Gamracy of the TRU Advancement Office said organizers are encouraging groups or companies to “sponsor” an aid station, which means having a group of volunteers hand out water to participants and cheer them on.
This year’s event also features a corporate challenge in which businesses can enter a Marathon Corporate Relay team or participate in the 8K corporate team event. A trophy will be awarded for each category.
All participants will receive medals and shirts (shirt and ribbon for 3K) and there will be a pancake breakfast.
Runners can register at http://www.kamloopsmarathon.com or email kamloopsmarathon@gmail.com to volunteer. For best prices, enter before May 31.
At what number on the Kamloops Air Quality Index would our city suggest that the event, for health reasons, be changed to a better day?

I just can’t bring myself to support a healthy living event with a huge multinational mining company (who appears to be trying to buy social license) as a main sponsor. I won’t help with or participate in advertising for KGHM.
Sorry, Kamloops Marathon, I know it is hard to say no to donations, and other nonprofits take money from KGHM, but this event (and all sports events) are about health and wellness. I think that allowing a company trying to buy credibility and appear supportive of healthy living and sport – but who also want to put a huge mine in our city – to sponsor this event is especially hypocritical and irresponsible.
I won’t volunteer, donate, attend or participate as a result. I have been a volunteer and participant for other sports events in town, but I won’t help with this one.
