SPCA branch robbed in weekend break-in
NEWS — The Kamloops branch of the SPCA received a blow to its finances on the weekend as thieves broke into the 8th Street shelter and made off with several thousand dollars in cash.
Branch manager Charlene Holloway said today the break-in apparently occurred either Sunday night or early Monday through the front door. She “guestimated” between $3,000 and $5,000 was stolen.
Thankfully, the animals were not harmed, she said.
The branch is in the middle of a fundraising drive that includes a Fur Ball gala this weekend. “We’re trying our best to keep going but it’s a lot to take in financially.”
In addition to funding needed for the basics, the branch has been facing costs to heal two cats, Pascha and Wesley. Pascha, an eight-week-old female kitten, might need a leg amputated while Wesley, a one-year-old, has had surgery for a pelvic fracture and a dislocated right leg.
The SPCA estimates medical costs could exceed $1,000.
Theme for the first annual Fur Ball, Friday, May 23, is Celebrating Second Chances. It’s at the Coast Kamloops Hotel and Conference Centre. Tickets are available at kamloopslive.ca (250-374-LIVE) or at the shelter at 1211-8th Street
How could someone do this ? As much as I do not like how this SPCA is run, it’s just despicable that some moron could steal money meant to help animals. I have to ask also, why the hell was this money not put in the bank ? I think that maybe there are some serious management issues at play here too.
