ARTS/ ENTERTAINMENT — The final film of the Kamloops Film Society’s Spring Film Series — Ralph Fiennes’ The Invisible Woman — will be screened tomorrow (Thursday, May 8) at 7 p.m. at the Paramount Theatre, 5th and Victoria.

Tickets are available in advance at Moviemart (444 St. Paul Street) or at the Paramount door tomorrow evening.

The Ralph Fiennes-directed The Invisible Woman is a portrait of the relationship between iconic British author Charles Dickens (Fiennes) and actress Ellen Ternan (Felicity Jones) in the 1850s.

Bored with his intellectually shallow wife, Dickens takes the educated actress as his mistress with the full cooperation of her mother (Kristin Scott Thomas). The film depicts their stormy relationship, one which provides Ellen with opportunities and a lifestyle few women of her time could enjoy.

However, Ellen is confronted with Charles’s emotional cruelty and while determining to keep their affair secret, she must judge her role and decide if the price she pays is bearable.

This 2013 film is Fienne’s second as director (“Coriolanus”). One reviewer noted, “It’s Fienne’s portrayal of the complex, driven private man behind the boundless enthusiasm and charisma of Dicken’s public image that makes his performance special.”

The interesting thread is this relationship was a result of Dickens and the Franklin Expedition , which is a Canadian interest story .

Last night my wife and I went to see this movie. I must say that it started so slow that I almost fell asleep. However as the movie moved on, it became more interesting. On a scale of 1 to 5, I give it a 2.5 or possibly a 3.
