Suspicious package ‘doesn’t appear’ to have been a bomb; police re-open York Street
NEWS/ POLICE — A bomb squad has removed a suspicious object that was found at 769 York Street today and the street has been re-opened after being behind police lines most of the day.
The package was reported by neighbours at about 7 a.m. and access to the area was restricted while RCMP waited for the bomb disposal unit to arrive from the Lower Mainland.
Cpl. Cheryl Bush said investigation into who placed the object in the driveway continues.
“At this stage in the investigation the package does not appear to have contained any explosive materials,” said Bush.
The house is the same one at which a pipe bomb was found at the front door March 28.
Bert Edwards School of Science and Technology and a nearby daycare were evacuated and shut down during the closure of the area. Staff of the school went to Henry Grube Education Centre after the closure.
The explosive disposal unit arrived on the scene shortly after noon and got a closer look at the object using a robot. The package was “rendered safe” for closer examination.
Bush said investigators will continue to examine evidence and make enquiries in an effort to determine who is responsible. The Kamloops Serious Crime Unit continues to investigate the March 28 incident as well, Bush said.
