‘Safe’ Ajax jobs possible if community works together, says Steelworkers 1-417 president
NEWS — The president of United Steelworkers Local 1-417 says his executive is strongly in favour of the Ajax project, unlike the president of another local, 7619.
And he says opponents of the mine should be willing to consider the possibility it can be done safely.
Marty Gibbons said today the 1-417 executive voted unanimously in support of Ajax unless there’s an unfavourable environmental assessment report. The local represents 1,400 workers in Interior sawmills, trucking, construction and other industries.
Richard Boyce, who heads up Local 7619, told a crowd last weekend he’s in favour of mining but “not this mine.”
Boyce, who said he was speaking only for himself and not the local he leads, said the project is too close to Kamloops and there are too many things environmental studies can’t answer.
Gibbons, however, said his local believes Ajax can produce “safe jobs,” and the community needs them in view of job cuts and losses in other industries.
Both locals have split from the Kamloops and District Labour Council, which opposes Ajax.
“We feel that an environmentally sound Ajax project is possible and if the parties work together we can make that happen and bring those jobs to Kamloops,” Gibbons said.
“Our official position is that we support an environmentally sound Ajax project.”
Gibbons said one of the reasons traffic is growing at the Kamloops Airport is because people have to leave jobs to find work.
“Kamloops is bleeding jobs and how far does it have to get before people realize the connection between increased city taxes, decreased enrolment in schools and property values?” he told CBC Daybreak Kamloops.
“We feel jobs are important and we feel they’re part of a community and if we don’t have them then we don’t have a community… Families shouldn’t have to be broken up to get work.”
Gibbons said opponents of Ajax “aren’t even prepared to consider the possibility that this mine can be done safely. The anti-Ajax position is ‘no.’”
He said the environmental review should be allowed to take its course. “We don’t believe that people with biased positions should be making opinions. We, unlike the ‘no’ movement, are prepared to consider both sides of the argument.”
He said the “drama” needs to be taken out of the debate.
“We sure seem to have a group that moves from one agenda item to the next, whether it’s parking lots or trees in front of the hospital, although the theme sure seems to be ‘no’ fairly steady. It’s awful easy to say no.”

Gibbons, said his local believes Ajax can produce “safe jobs”, ”We feel that an environmentally sound Ajax project is possible”. Why then are some pit workers unable to finish their pit shifts because they are ill, have difficulty breathing? Why are mining pension plans so well funded? Maybe fewer mine workers are alive to collect?

Gibbons may just be in a recruiting mode. Opportunities need to be “seized” regardless of greater consequences.
Like New Gold, Ajax will do whatever they can to be non-union.

Any non union shop is a determent to working people as are recruitment of foreign workers. Non union jobs and foreign workers work for less so this is what the industry wants.

Pretty divisive statement. I for one, have never been part of any group that runs around saying no to everything. In fact, all those I know who oppose Ajax are new to this whole protesting business! We aren’t all retired either!
I don’t think the proponents are all a bunch of rednecks in diesel trucks who like to drink beer and dirt bike either. I wish the stereotyping would stop and people would just talk about the projects pros and cons and skip maligning those they disagree with.
And considering many of us have concerns about the environmental review process, the idea that the provincial government is infallible does little to reassure me.
Has everyone forgotten that the medical health officer who was the expert representing IHA requested that the project be declared a health hazard?

I wish Shelly Joyce would have asked Mr Gibbons what he thinks about that expert opinion! Oh let me guess, our former medical health officer from Salmon Arm is probably just one of the usual “no to everything” Kamloops people.

Of course we all want a Federal review, after all we were successful in shutting down the Taseko New Prosperity Mine which is miles from anywhere and would have eliminated a nation of unemployed people from the welfare rolls. However, we proved that there was a possible threat to one lake in a country that has over three million lakes, not to mention a hundred thousand unnamed lakes. So now we have 500 jobs gone from that area and 350 to 500 in this area and now we can set our sights on New Gold and then HVC. The next institution to go will be the university as with no children to teach and no jobs to get, we won’t need that expensive university will we?

Don’t be so dramatic, please. While resource extraction is important to the whole BC/Canada economy, there are many jurisdictions that do quite well being service/entrepreneurial centers. In Kamloops we need to believe we can do better.
There is great value to great leadership. We can do without Ajax but we need better local leadership. The November municipal elections will be upon us in a few months. Pay attention, ask questions and please make a wise choice.

Seems like you clearly fear Ajax will fail a Federal Assessment. Is that why you are so happy to leave it to the easier provincial one? If KGHM can make a safe and efficient mine, it should stand up to a rigorous test. If you were getting a cancerous lump checked, would you want a biopsy or just have your doctor poke at it and assume?

I have the same question for Marty Gibbons – do you support, and will you ask for, a Federal Panel Review??
After all, it is the best review process available – Do you think Kamloops residents deserve it??

I wonder if Marty Gibbons would support having a federal panel review. Richard Boyce said he would.
