Alexander ‘Alex’ McIntosh was reported missing to the RCMP on Aug. 19, 2013. His car was found in Riverside Park near the tennis courts and RCMP conducted a thorough search of the park and surrounding area using boats, a helicopter and a dog team to no avail.

His body was found April 8. The B.C. Coroner’s Service continues to investigate the death but foul play has been ruled out.

McIntosh was 87. He was the director of nursing at Tranquille School for special needs residents from 1963 until it closed in 1983.

“He invested a lot of his time in working with the residents at Tranquille,” a family member said at the time of his disappearance.

“He was pretty instrumental in seeing that these residents were looked after and had homes later in life,” he said.

After the school closed, McIntosh continued to work with non-profits to help those in need after Tranquille closed, and was involved in organizing several reunions of staff who had worked there.

McIntosh’s wife Ella died in 2006. Both he and his wife were born in Aberdeen, Scotland, and met when they were 16-year-old members of a drama group during rehearsals for a play called Quality Street.

They immigrated to Canada in 1957, first to Edmonton and to Kamloops in 1963, where Alex took up his position at Tranquille and where they lived on the grounds. They have five children.

After Tranquille closed, they moved to Pritchard.

  2. Our thoughts are with his loving family. Sandy(as I knew Alex)and I went to the same schools,Woodside School, then on to Hilton Secondary School, then on to Hilton Youth Club.Saturday nights were Dance night at the Youth Club, and that is where I met my life-long sweetheart,Margaret, when we were both 17years of age.Margaret just happened to be the sister of Ella,so Alex & I became brothers-in-law.We used to go cycling together up Royal Deeside
Alex served his apprenticeship as a carpenter,to become a shipwrights at Hall Russell’s shipyard in Aberdeen. My father was a shipwrights too,at the same yard.Alex was a first class worker at his trade, but became so annoyed at the workers of all the different trades in the yard, coming out in strikes at different times, causing so much disruption, that he decided to pack his job in.He started learning a completely new career—Mental Nursing at Kingseat Mental Hospital,15miles outside Aberdeen. As always,he worked and studied night & day to strive for perfection, and carried on to reach that for the rest of his life.
He is sadly missed.God Bless him And his family.
