NEWS — Work is underway on two projects near and dear to the North Shore.

Forms are in place and concrete is being poured by B.A. Dawson on the north sidewalk of Tranquille Road between Royal Avenue and Leigh Road.

Highly visible road markers are in place to guide drivers around the work area. The work started Wednesday and is expected to take several days.

Repairs to the Overlanders Bridge corbels start today and will continue for three to five weeks, with the work being done between 7 p.m. and 3 a.m. and during the day on Saturdays in order limit the impact on traffic.

The Saturday work is needed because some of it requires daylight.

Corbels on the sidewalk side of the bridge need inspection and repair. Previously, concrete had fallen from under the bridge on the West Victoria side.

“Corbel” is a fancy word for a thing that juts out from a wall and supports the structure above it.

City council decided in January not to replace the deck on the bridge until 2015 so more studies can be done on how best to handle repairs to the bridge’s old sidewalk, which was built with the bridge in 1961.
