Change of venue for Boyce talk on Ajax
NEWS — A speech by a former supporter of Ajax who now opposes the project is changing venues.
Richard Boyce, president of the United Steelworkers local 7619 at Highland Valley Copper, will speak Sunday, April 13 at 2 p.m. in the Parkside Lounge at Interior Savings Centre.
He had been originally scheduled to speak at the TRU Clocktower Theatre where other Ajax talks have been held. No reason was given for the change in venue.
Boyce’s talk is entitled “The Reality of Having a Mine on Our Doorstep.”
Parking is free on the street during the talk, and available for a small fee in nearby marked lots.
The event is sponsored by the TRU Faculty Association executive, TRU Faculty Association Human Rights Committee, Kamloops Physicians for a Healthy Environment and the TRU Eco Club.
Dr. Jill Calder of the Kamloops Physicians for a Health Environment will moderate.

United Steelworkers on Proposed Ajax Mine
October 24, 2013
The United Steelworkers have a long history of supporting mining. It’s an important industry that not only supports communities, but also provides a good livelihood to many workers. We’re proud of the contributions that miners make to our provincial economy and communities across British Columbia.
We believe that all mining should be done as responsibly as possible – that includes the proposed Ajax mine in Kamloops. Any time a new mine is proposed, it undergoes a process of environmental review. That process is currently underway with respect to the Ajax proposal. We believe that the process should continue and be inclusive of the larger community and their concerns. This provides an opportunity for all people and groups to put forward their comments.
The United Steelworkers is proud to be B.C. and Canada’s Mining Union. We represent over 20,000 miners across the country, and over 6,000 right here in B.C. These men and women work hard each and every day to build an economy that can support the public services that everyone depends on. As members of the United Steelworkers, they earn industry-leading wages, benefits, health and safety protections, and strong representation at work. They deserve nothing less, and our union will continue to stand up for miners across our province.
