Contract awarded for redo of John Tod

NEWS — Work on the John Tod Community Centre got the go-ahead from City council today, paving the way for $1.8 million worth of renovations that will turn the former elementary school  into new quarters for the Kamloops Community Y and the Boys and Girls club of Kamloops.

In a special meeting this morning, council heard a bid from Acres Enterprises was the only bid received. Pre-construction estimate was $1.7 million but administration said Acres’ bid is a fair price.

Work is expected to start immediately and last 24 weeks, allowed for a fall opening.

The go-ahead came on a tight deadline — in order to access a $250,000 federal grant, the contract had to be awarded by March 31.

Renovations will include partial demolition of interior and exterior finishes, hazardous material removal, drywall, painting, flooring, utility installation and the addition of a shared lobby.

John Tod will be leased to the City by School District 73 and sub-leased to the Y and the Boys and Girls Club. After sitting empty for two years, plans to re-open it as a community centre were announced in 2012.

After the renovations are completed, the Boys and Girls Club building on McArthur Island will be demolished.
