Free movies on score clock for Earth Hour

NEWS — Just as we’re getting a little more spring sunlight, it’s time to turn off the lights.
Earth Hour is coming up Saturday. That’s when we’re supposed to turn down the thermostat, turn off the lights and unplug our electronics
EarthhourThe City has also issued an invitation to bring the whole family out for two free movies to be shown on the score clock at Interior Savings Centre.
Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, with the movie Walking With Dinosaurs at 6:30 and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty at 8:15.
Concessions will be open. The City advises bringing a blanket to keep warm.
For those who want to be a little more active during Earth Hour, there’s the Dim Swim at Canada Games Pool from 6 to 9 pm.
Earth Hour is an annual global event hosted by the World Wildlife Fund that encourages individuals to turn off unnecessary lights and electronics to conserve power and demonstrate support for climate change reduction efforts.
Last year during Earth Hour, British Columbians saved 136 megawatt hours of electricity and reduced the provincial electricity load by 1.95 per cent. That is the equivalent of turning off more than 10 million 12.5-watt LED light bulbs. In 2013, Kamloopsians reduced their electrical usage by 2.2 per cent.
Here are some other tips to save energy:
1. Wash clothes in cold water; water heating accounts for 90 per cent of the energy used.
2. Hang your clothes to dry whenever possible; a dryer typically uses the most electricity of any appliance (after the refrigerator).
3. Lowering the thermostat at bedtime and while you are away can reduce your energy bill by 10 per cent or more without affecting your comfort.
4. Limit showers to five minutes or less and use a low flow shower head.
