City to look at proposal for new trail route
NEWS/ CITY HALL — The City’s trail system may get a 13-km. extension between Halston junction and the Tournament Ranch north of Rayleigh if an initial look at it leads to a study that proves it’s feasible and funding is eventually approved.
City council agreed today to look into the study after a presentation by a citizens committee on the concept of a new gravel trail on the west side of Highway 5 that could be used by bikers, runners and walkers.
They stopped short, however, of committing study money, instead directing staff to take a “high level” look at the possibilities.
Committee co-chair Gerry Orlund said the trail would promote the Tournament Ranch facilities, pedestrian and cycling safety, and lifestyle.
He outlined the route for council, noting an existing easement varies from five to 15 metres. “There’s certainly room to build a two-metre gravel trail,” he said.
The route would take about 45 minutes by bike.
Some councilors wondered whether a paved trail would be better, and Orlund said the committee considered that but it would add to the cost.
“We thought, let’s keep the cost low.”
The trail would require support and approval from the Highways Ministry and Tk’emlups Indian Band as well as the City. Staff estimate the capital cost would come to seven figures.
Council expressed enthusiasm for the idea, with Coun. Donovan Cavers saying, “I think it’s a very reasonable plan. I think it would be a great investment.”
Coun. Ken Christian said that “in my mind connecting the assets that the city has together is a good thing.”
But Coun. Tina Lange emphasized “no money” for a study yet.
