Lorne-Lansdown-Victoria intersection will cost $200,000 more than budgeted for upgrade
CITY HALL — The intersection of Lorne, Lansdowne and Victoria Streets will be tougher to get through beginning next month, but it will be worth it — $1.8 million worth.
The work will cost taxpayers $200,000 more than budgeted, and will take about five months.
Projects manager Kristen Meersman said all three bids received for the work were higher than expected but the lowest is acceptable due to the complexity of the job.
Realignment of the intersection is the last phase of a four-phase upgrade to the Lorne Street corridor involving street work, better traffic circulation, and enhancing the look of the area connecting Riverside Park, the Interior Savings Centre and the downtown core.
The roundabout in front of the ISC was part of the earlier upgrades.
The latest phase will allow better traffic movement through the intersection and will also involve resurfacing the rest of Lorne Street between Uji Way and Lansdowne Street, and improvements to the Riverside Park entrance at Heritage House.
Construction will involve substantial traffic and pedestrian disruptions, a report to City council said.
“While the contractor will attempt to mitigate the impact to both motorists and pedestrians, significant detours and delays can be expected. Parking may be limited or restricted in the 100 block of Victoria Street while the intersection of Victoria Street and First Avenue is under construction.”
