TRU prof to speak on potential economic costs of air pollution

NEWS — Is there an economic cost to air pollution?

Peter Tsigaris, an economics professor at Thompson Rivers University, will explore that question March 9 at a presentation in the Clocktower Theatre. Tsigaris will explore the economics of the potential health impact of deteriorating air quality, including the possible impact of the Ajax mine.

“Our own lifestyle and technology, existing industries, and new projects such as the Ajax mine produce benefits to producers and consumers around the world but economic activity often comes with external/social costs,” says an overview of the talk.

The TRU faculty’s human rights committee and the TRU Eco Club will co-host the event, which will start at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 9. It’s entitled, “What are the possible economic costs of an increase in air pollution in Kamloops?” Admission is free.

Tsigaris has presented his research into environmental economics at numerous conferences around the world.

Professor Tsigaris will, I am sure, show that this project is public policy made by campaign contributions. The spillover costs and benefits that all projects look at must be calculated by the city within the framework of an overall strategic vision or development plan for Kamloops. City council must be cautious, and understand that job creation is a government political bumper sticker approach to resource extraction, which politicians parrot for public consumption.
