GREYHOUND – Cuts in service ‘a necessary step toward viable business’

B.C.’s Passenger Transportation Board has approved cuts in Greyhound bus service in several parts of the province including Kamloops to Kelowna.

Three routes in southwestern B.C. and three route segments along highway 97 from Monte Lake to Vernon will be eliminated.

In its decision, the board said it had heard from many people and communities about Greyhound’s application.

“They said that service reductions increase public safety concerns, especially in areas where transportation options are limited and winters are harsh. They also said that Greyhound provides a necessary service to some people.”

But the board said Greyhound’s ridership has declined by 30 per cent over the past five years and the company can no longer subsidize losses on unprofitable routes with revenue from the more profitable ones.

In a news release Wednesday, Greyhound said the the PTB’s decision is “a necessary step toward becoming a viable, streamlined, and profitable intercity bus business.”

Most of the route eliminations won’t take effect before June 1.

Here are the summaries of the board’s decisions:
