Pedestrians take back the streets for Car Free Day in downtown core

NEWS — It’s a Car Free Day in the downtown core on Wednesday — the 200, 300 and 400 blocks of Victoria Street will be pedestrian only as they’re closed to traffic.

Instead of cars, there will be tents, booths, sidewalk sales, music, artists and entertainment as part of the Downtown Merchants Market that runs through Saturday. The Victoria Street closure will be Wednesday only.

And that’s not all. The United Way Community Carnival will be there along with many other community groups, and bike parking  will be free.

“The City of Kamloops Car Free Day is like a Saturday Farmers Market on steroids on a Wednesday,” is how the Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association describes it.

The day runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with the exception of the 400 block, which is starting one hour earlier.

Here’s a taste of the rest of the week:

I wish there was no vehicular traffic from First Ave to Sixth Ave from 1 AM to midnight, seven days a week, 12 months of the year. Imagine that, less stinking, noisy machines and just people, art, culture, food, music.
