Friday update on road construction from City of Kamloops.

Overlanders Bridge

Work continues to progress on the Fortune Drive overpass, as well as the west lanes of the bridge deck and west sidewalk. Existing lane and ramp closures stay in effect.

A web cam will be installed on Fortune Drive at Leigh Road, likely within the next week.

Columbia Street

Fortis crews completed the gas realignment at Fourth Avenue and Columbia Street earlier this week.

B.C. Hydro crews are currently working on the realignment of hydro ducts in preparation of the hydro switch kiosk relocation at Fourth Avenue and Columbia Street. A reminder that Fourth Avenue, between Columbia Street and the alleyway, will be closed to traffic for up to one month to accommodate this work. Columbia Street, between Fourth Avenue and the entrance to the Travelodge, is down to two lanes (one each direction) to allow for the hydro work.

The traffic signals at the intersection of 4th Avenue and Columbia Street remain in operation. Flaggers are present 24 hours a day at this location and assisting with traffic flow as required.

The Columbia Street contractor, BA Dawson Blacktop Ltd., has marked out the work zone on the south side of Columbia Street with fencing.

The construction window is 7 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday to Saturday. There may be some night work as needed.

Crews have started removing about 20 trees on the south side of Columbia Street between Third Avenue and Sixth Avenue to allow for the road widening. To accommodate the tree removal, the eastbound curb lane will be closed between Fifth and Sixth Avenues (access will be maintained to Glenfair Drive). For every tree that is removed, two trees will be planted (on the south side of Columbia Street and on the new center medians). To view the landscaping plan, visit http://www.kamloops.ca/kammute/pdfs/15-Columbia-LandscapePlan.pdf.

Crews are dismantling and removing the fountain located near the corner of Columbia Street and 6th Avenue.

A web cam will be installed on Columbia Street at Third Avenue, likely within the next week, to provide motorists and pedestrians with east, west and north views.

  1. These cameras are a good example of council spending money just for the sake of spending. You go online, look at the cameras, and by the time you get to that particular spot, everything has changed already. Council needs to get a grip on the purse strings, and smarten up.
